Video is one of the most engaging ways to tell a story, and as a business owner, you want to make sure that you are reaching as many people as possible. That’s why it’s vital to upload video content directly to Facebook.

New data from Socialbakers, a social media analytics company, indicates that more users are uploading videos directly to Facebook than are sharing from Youtube. Native Facebook videos also receive more interaction than videos shared from Youtube. As compared to only 50% of total video interactions in January 2014, Facebook is now getting more than 80% of all video interactions.

This shift in power comes as marketers and content creators realize there is more value in publishing a video directly to Facebook than there is uploading it to Youtube. Some of the benefits Facebook videos have over Youtube include:

  • Simplified discovery process, as videos appear directly in the newsfeed
  • Discussions in comments are with friends, as opposed to strangers
  • Larger video preview image

One of the biggest advantages of Facebook video is the autoplay feature, which allows users to view video content as they scroll through the newsfeed. Since the user is not searching directly for the video, however, it is more important than ever for the first few minutes of content to be compelling. Much like a clickbait headline, you want the beginning of the video to hook the viewer and entice them into watching the rest.

Facebook also highly prioritizes original video uploaded to its service, so it’s more likely that users will see your content than if you link from an external video site.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is one of many brands who realize the importance of uploading video to Facebook. In October 2014, KLM posted a video to Youtube and Facebook separately. Fans engaged with KLM’s latest YouTube video 300,000 times, with likes and shares, but they engaged 350,000 times on Facebook, even though it received fewer views.
